A compatriot of Martin Luther King, Jr., Bayard Rustin was “rendered invisible” because of his sexual orientation, but he was the architect of the 1963 March on Washington and a great human rights leader. Rustin was the organizer of the March on Washington and a trusted colleague of Dr. King. Because Rustin was gay, and openly so, his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement were sometimes overlooked. However, Rustin has been recently gaining more recognition, having been posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barak Obama on August 8, 2013.
